The palace, superbly finished with Burmese teak, features a magnificent ballroom with a high valued ornamental papier-mache ceiling. This has two overlooking galleries, one veiled with lace curtains for the ladies of the household and the other for the court orchestra. The first Fernhills bungalow was built in 1844 by Capt. F. Cotton.
